The Kozhikode District Football Association (KDFA) has decided to revive the fabled Sait Nagjee Football tourney, and none other that Brazilian legend Ronaldinho Gaucho will be the brand ambassador. Teams from the English Premier League and German Bundesliga will be participating in what is expected to be one of the most high-profile international tournament held in India in recent memory.

“It is the first time that top European and Latin American clubs are coming to India for a tournament. We hope to revive the glorious football tradition of Kozhikode with this tournament,” Hifsu Rehman, chairman of Mondial Sports LLP, said in a press conference, as reported by Sportstarlive.com.

Mondial and KDFA have set about, as a joint venture, reviving the iconic tournament. The last edition of the tournament, which was inaugurated in 1952, was held in 1995, with JCT winning the title. The revived tournament will be held at the Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode, from February 5 to 21. Premier League club Watford FC, Bundesliga clubs Hertha BSC and TSV 1860 Munich, and La Liga's Levante UD are among those who have been confirmed for this tournament. KDFA secretary P. Haridas has also announced that there will be an I-League team which will participate in the tournament, although he stopped short of revealing the name of the club. He said, “The eighth team will be an I-League team. We will finalise the Indian team within a couple of days”.

However, the news which will catch the attention of the Indian football fans, is the imminent arrival of former World Cup winner, and World Player of the Year, Ronaldinho.

“He (Ronaldinho) will come here for the event. We hope to bring back the football glory of Kerala with this tournament. Though this is the first project of Mondial in India, we have been conducting football tournaments in Saudi Arabia, where we are based, for the last several years,” Hifsu confirmed.
