Russia will be kicked out of the European Championship if one more incident of stadium trouble is caused by their fans, said UEFA on Tuesday. A probe launched by UEFA on the violent clashes before, during, and after the Russia-England game found the Russia fans responsible for it.
Fans of both the teams rioted before the game in Marseille, forcing police to use tear gas and water cannons to stop the fights, and Russia were held responsible for the stadium disturbances, racist chanting, and fireworks thrown during their game against England on Sunday. UEFA expressed it’s utter disgust at the clashes and ordered the “suspended disqualification” of the team while fining the Russian Football Union 15,000 euros.
"This disqualification is suspended until the end of the tournament. Such suspension will be lifted if incidents of a similar nature (crowd disturbances) happen inside the stadium at any of the remaining matches of the Russian team during the tournament," said the UEFA disciplinary commission decision according to AFP.
The UEFA stressed that it’s order applied only to stadium trouble, where it is responsible for security. The Russia-England game in Marseille ended in a 1-1 draw, following which the Russian fans crossed the security barriers inside the Stade Velodrome and attacked the English fans. Supporters in the stand, including women and children had to flee across the security barriers to escape, sparking memories of the Hillsborough disaster, the worst sporting incident in England’s history.
The UEFA had already warned England and Russia that they could be disqualified if there was more trouble. But according to AFP, only the Russia Football Union was charged over this. Russia will be nervous about their match in Lille against Slovakia on Wednesday, with the English team set to play against Wales on Thursday at Lens, with both cities barely 30 km apart.
