Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski backed Liverpool's chances for the Premier League title this season under his former coach Jurgen Klopp. Lewandowski, who developed into one of Europe's finest strikers at Dortmund under Klopp, also said that the German was like a father to him.

After making a name for themselves in Germany with Dortmund by winning back-to-back Bundesliga crowns in 2011 and 2012, Lewandowski and Klopp burst onto the European scene by reaching the Champions League final in the 2012-2013 season.

Lewandowski, who left Dortmund in 2014, feels Liverpool, whom Klopp joined in October 2015, will be a strong title challenger this season with the German at the helm.

“Under Klopp I think they (Liverpool) will be fighting for the title this season,” the Poland international told Goal.com. “Pep and Manchester City will not make it easy for anybody to win the title, but Liverpool have a real chance,” he added.

Lewandowski also felt that the absence of European football at Anfield will allow the Merseysiders to focus completely on the domestic title. “Without European football it can really help them with being fresh for games and with injuries and, even though Klopp is always smiling, he is ruthless enough to take advantage of that,” the striker said.

Praising the man-management skills of his former coach, Lewandowski said that Klopp was like a “father figure” to him. “I have watched some Liverpool games since the arrival of Klopp, and you can see that the players are enjoying playing for him,” he said.

“As a player you know that he totally has your back, he is like a father figure and, because you have that trust in him as a player, it makes you totally open to his methods and his ideas which, in the long term, you always see are for the benefit of your game and for the team,” Lewandowski added.
