The Blue Tigers moved up four positions to 148th in the latest FIFA rankings released for the month of September following their sensational win against 114th placed Puerto Rico in an international friendly at Mumbai. In April, India were ranked 147th but lost 15 places by June, 2016.
The Indian football team managed by Stephen Constantine, on Thursday, climbed back into the top-150 in the FIFA rankings after being ranked 152 in the month of August. With their thumping victory 4-1 over higher-ranked Puerto Rico at the Mumbai Football Arena earlier this month, India earned 219 ranking points to make the ascent in the rankings.
India, who hold an average of 134 in the FIFA ranking system, reached their highest rank of 100 in the year, 1993. Since then, the team has been unable to break into the top hundred due to a number of reasons, but mostly due to poor form.
However, last month's 3-0 victory against Bhutan will not be taken into consideration as it was an unofficial friendly.
Meanwhile, Argentina hold the No.1 position as World Champions Germany climbed up to third in the FIFA rankings behind Belgium. European Champions Portugal stand at No. 7 in the rankings.
