It needed an 82nd-minute volley by Raheem Sterling to avoid the season’s first loss for the Sky Blues as the star-studded squad managed a 1-1 draw against a resilient Everton at the Etihad Stadium. Wayne Rooney scored his 200th Premier League goal when he put the Toffees ahead in the first half.

Pep Guardiola’s men were expectantly dominant throughout the first-half creating numerous chances and even hitting the woodwork once, before a terrible nine-minute spell prior to halftime saw them fall behind from a deflected Wayne Rooney strike, which was soon followed by full back Kyle Walker seeing a red card.

Everton’s young sensation Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his impressive run in the campaign as his perfectly paced grounded cross from the right flank needed a left footed placement by the former Manchester United striker at the 35th minute. Ederson was unfortunate to see it squeeze through his legs and hit the inside of the post before trickling in.

Manchester City have been Rooney’s favourite opponents in reaching milestones as his 50 and 150 career goals had also come against them. Guardiola’s side showed real quality to resist Everton's attack in the second half with a man less until Raheem Sterling volleyed one in the bottom left corner from a miscued header by Mason Holgate to find the equaliser.

Though Everton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin became the second player on the night to see a red by getting two yellows in the 88th minute, it was too late for City to script a comeback win. The draw places Manchester City (4 pts) in the fifth position and Everton (4pts) in the eighth position of the league table with goal difference seeing them apart.
