Danny Welbeck scored the only goal of the game edging Arsenal past West Ham United to advance to the EFL Cup semi-finals. In the other quarter-final clash, Manchester City managed to join the Gunners in the next round thanks to a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Leicester City after a 1-1 AET draw.

Arsenal 1 – 0 West Ham United

Arsenal booked a place in the semi-final of the EFL Cup for the first time since the 2010-11 season, thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over West Ham at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday. Danny Welbeck was the star of the game for Arsenal scoring the only goal late in the first half.

Both David Moyes and Arsene Wenger had named sides filled with senior internationals, with Theo Walcott captaining Arsenal and Javier Hernandez making his first appearance for West Ham since returning from a hamstring injury.

Stand-in skipper Walcott missed a chance to open the goal tally when he flashed his free header wide of goal. However, Arsenal did not have to wait too long for their goal as Welbeck helped followed up his own fluffed effort to beat Joe Hart from close range in the 42nd minute.

However, it wasn't all good news for Arsenal as Olivier Giroud limped off in the second half with a hamstring injury which will mean that Wenger will have just Alexandre Lacazette tp bank on in the hectic festive schedule.

Leicester City 1 – 1 Manchester City (Manchester City win 4-3 on penalties)

Claudio Bravo was Manchester City's hero on the day as he managed to keep team’s hopes of winning some silverware alive after a tense penalty shootout at the King Power Stadium. The goalkeeper saved Riyad Mahrez's spot-kick which helped Pep Guardiola's side win 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Bernado Silva had scored the opener in the first half, after missing a couple of early sights at goal. Manchester City dominated proceeding for most parts of the game but a late lateJamie Vardy penalty ensured the game went on for an additional 30 minutes.

However, with no clear winner in sight, the result had to be decided via the lottery of the penalty shootout. While City converted all of their four spot kicks, Leicester were knocked out after Vardy and Mahrez failed to find the back of the net.
