Premier League | Huddersfield stun Manchester United; Chelsea, Manchester City get easy wins

Manchester United’s unbeaten run in the Premier League came to a halt on Saturday as newly promoted side Huddersfield Town surprised the league giants with a 2-1 win at John Smith's Stadium. Other title contenders, Chelsea and Manchester City saw easy wins over Watford and Burnley respectively.

Huddersfield Town 2-1 Manchester United

Two first-half goals from Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre helped Huddersfield Town achieve an unlikely result against the mighty Manchester United, who saw their first league defeat of the season at John Smith's Stadium.

It took the Terriers just 28 minutes to take the lead when their last year’s ‘player of the season’, Mooy, showed quick reactions to a David De Gea save and placed the rebound into the bottom corner. Before United could recover from their sloppy mistake, new signing Victor Lindelof misjudged a long ball from Huddersfield’s Jonas Lossl, leaving Depoitre for an easy finish, firing his side up by 2-0.

United were not prompt to turn up in the second half as their first goal came as late as in the 78 minute when a Romelu Lukaku cross was nodded in by Marcus Rashford. Despite some late pressure, the Red Devils couldn’t produce an equalizer, which now leaves them five points adrift of league leaders Manchester City.

Chelsea 4-2 Watford

After their frustrating result at Selhurst Park last week, Chelsea were in for a real scare when Watford looked like going away with three points with a sturdy display. However, two late second-half goals by super-sub Michy Batshuayi saw the Blues register a thrilling come-from-behind win over the Hornets at the Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea had opened their account early in the 12 minute from Pedro’s superb strike before Watford came back with an answer just before half-time through Abdoulaye Doucoure. Watford’s magic player this season Richarlison was in the thick of things yet again as he set up Roberto Pereyra for Watford’s second goal in the 61 minute.

Hardly had 10 minutes gone when Batshuayi brought on the equalizer with an inch-perfect header into the top corner. Chelsea regained their lead with three minutes left on the clock through a Cesar Azpilicueta goal following which Batshuayi scored another to assure a Chelsea win.

Manchester City 3-0 Burnley

Manchester City extended their lead at the top of the table to five points as they eased past Burnley with a 3-0 win at the Etihad Stadium. The opener was provided by injury return striker Sergio Aguero making him Manchester City's all-time joint-highest goal scorer now.

It was in the 29 minute that Burnley’s deputy goalie Nick Pope brought down winger Bernardo Silva inside the box. The Argentine didn’t make any mistake from the spot. Burnley’s attacking edge had blunted after Chris Wood’s injury and it was soon followed by Scott Arfield’s easy chance to equalize, which went begging as it was blocked after an Ederson error.

City didn’t leave anything to chance after that as the Sky Blues struck twice in the second-half within two minutes continuing their unbeaten streak. Centre-half Nicolas Otamendi headed in a corner from Leroy Sane, who was then set up by Kevin De Bruyne to score the third.
