Mohun Bagan has released an official statement in which they deplored the behaviour of their fans who were recorded damaging the newly constructed centenary gate of East Bengal. The club promised to bear the expenses of reconstruction and also lodged a police complaint against those responsible.

With East Bengal FC set to complete a hundred years of its existence a year from now, the club has been celebrating the landmark event in various ways. It has felicitated a host of celebrities already at its home ground including the likes of footballing legends such as Bhaichung Bhutia and Sunil Chhetri along with legends from other fields such as Kapil Dev and Sourav Ganguly.

A part of its celebrations was the construction of an overhead gate near its footballing premises in commemoration of its foundation on August the first in 1920. However, a few fans donning the Red and Maroon of local rivals Mohun Bagan were recorded tearing down the structure in a video that has gone viral on social media. 

The two clubs make up the fiercely competitive Bengal Derby that is almost a century old and is widely renowned as Asia’s greatest footballing rivalry. However, the clubs share mutual respect and in respect of the spirit of the game, Mohun Bagan has offered to pay for the restoration of the Red and Golden’s brigade’s celebratory gate.

“We condemn this nasty and unethical behaviour in the strongest of words. We have sent a letter to Kalyan Majumder, General Secretary of East Bengal and have requested them to re-erect the gate, the cost of the same will be borne by us,” Mohun Bagan said in a statement on Thursday.

The club also stated that is has also filed a complaint at the Maidan Police Station requesting them to look into the matter and punish those guilty for the shambolic offence,

“We appeal to supporters of both clubs to maintain mutual respect and harmony so that the image of both clubs and football is not tarnished,” the statement added.
