Newcastle United star Isaac Hayden has revealed that he wanted to stay at the club because it was the right move and not because he had to. The former Arsenal midfielder was a huge part of former manager Rafael Benitezā€™s plans but was itching for a move away last season, although that has changed.

The 24-year-old was one of the many reasons as to why Newcastle United survived the 2018/19 season, with Miguel Almiron, Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon also playing a part. However, his performances saw him targeted by clubs from all over the world, including West Ham United, although Hayden eventually opted to stay at Newcastle United.

Heā€™s now gone on to reveal just why he opted to stay at St James Park, even after Rafael Benitez left the club to join Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang. It was family issues that saw the 24-year-old request a transfer request in the 2019 January transfer window and he even went on to say that he had played his last game for the Magpies at the end of last season.

ā€œIĀ did only say I was ā€˜pretty sureā€™. But a lot can change in a few months, and a lot has changed. It has nothing to do with football. Family comes first and I would never make any apologies for that. It was quite easy for me in the end, to be honest,ā€ said Hayden in an exclusive with the Athletic.

ā€œI got told quite early on what the score was, so I pretty much knew before I came back for pre-season what was going to happen. I accepted it. My personal reasons for wanting to go have changed a little bit. In my head it meant I could adjust to staying a lot easier than I would have been able to otherwise.

ā€œIā€™m happy to have conversations about a new contract, as Iā€™ve said to the manager and the club, but I have to be valued in the right way. Iā€™m never going to sign for a football club purely for personal reasons,ā€ concluded the 24-year-old.
