Real Sociedad are very close to signing Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal this summer, with the La Liga side looking for a new left-back. The 33-year-old will fall down Arsenal manager Unai Emery’s pecking order once summer signing Kieran Tierney is fit and that has seen Monreal consider his future.

The 33-year-old defender has just one year left on his current deal with the North London giants, although earlier reports did indicate that Arsenal had released the Spaniard. But that was immediately rejected by the club, with Football London reporting that the North London side did activate a one-year extension clause in Monreal’s contract.

That does mean that the Spaniard will only become a free agent at the end of the 2019/20 season but that isn’t an immediate concern for the club. What is, is the fact that Football Espana has reported that La Liga side Real Sociedad are keen on a move for the 33-year-old defender, after losing Theo Hernandez to AC Milan, which leaves them without an experienced option at left-back.

The report also adds that the La Liga side believes that Monreal’s experience in the Spanish top tier will prove to be a stop-gap solution, with the left-back’s wife also pushing for the move. This does complicate things for Arsenal, although Football London has added that the club has no intentions of selling the 33-year-old this summer. Monreal himself has been very keen on staying at the club, even going on to say that his idea right now is to continue playing his football in London.
