Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has admitted that the recent losses may have put his team out of the title race and leaders Liverpool are too far ahead to be caught now. The Citizens lost 2-1 to their neighbours Manchester United leaving City a mammoth 14 points behind the Merseysiders.

In his post-match interview, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted that it is “not realistic”  to think of catching Liverpool in the Premier League title race. The England champions faced a harsh 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in the Manchester derby at the Etihad stadium with goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to secure the win.

This gives the Red Devils a massive boost having now beaten Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur and Guardiola’s City in the same week. This saw the former Barcelona boss admit that the title may have slipped from their hands as the gap between Liverpool and City is too large. Regardless, the Spaniard urged his players to keep on doing what they need to with the Cityzens currently third on the table, 3 points behind second-placed Leicester City and 14 behind the Reds.

“It is not time to think about that. We have to try to continue. There are many things to play for. We think about what we have to do and the next game - it is not realistic to think about catching up. Obviously it is so difficult because the opponents have had 16 games with 15 victories and they are on an incredible run and sometimes we have dropped points. But our duty, and what you have to do, is continue,” said Guardiola to the BBC.

The derby also caught the headlines for the wrong reasons as Manchester United midfielder Fred became a victim of racism during a corner with a Manchester City fan making monkey gestures towards the Brazil international and City have pledged to punish the guilty. The loss to Solskjaer’s men also leaves City with 4 defeats in 16 games, as many as they suffered in the entirety of the last league campaign. To make things even worse, Leicester City could extend their lead over Manchester City by 6 points if they win their next game.
