Laurent Koscielny has finally opened about his Achilles rupture that saw him miss the 2018 World Cup and the Frenchman admitted that it was a dark moment for him. The former Arsenal star would have been a first team option for the French but an injury saw him miss the entire tournament.

Walking into Arsenal’s semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid, former Gunners defender Laurent Koscielny fell to the ground in incredible pain. So much, that the defender had to be stretchered off the field and given oxygen in the dressing room. Later it was revealed that the Frenchman had ruptured his Achilles tendon and would miss at least eight months of action.

The injury eventually saw Koscielny miss out on the 2018 World Cup and the Frenchman has finally opened up about the incident. He went on to reveal that it was the darkest moment of his career and that it took him a long time to accept the fact that he was injured. The 32-year-old also added that he never felt like a world champion despite everyone in France celebrating Les Blues’ victory over Croatia in the final.

“The World Cup will remain a dark spot of my career. The injury was hard to accept. The result was even harder because they won the World Cup. I have a selfish side. I tell myself that I could have been part of the adventure and won the Cup. And I would have it in a corner of my head for the rest my life. It’s difficult and no one can put themselves in my shoes,” he told the Athletic.

“I was really happy for them, but also disgusted. You cannot feel like a world champion, as the 60 million French could. It’s a strange feeling that during the tournament I wanted them to qualify but at the same time, I wanted them to lose. That was my feeling at the time.”

The 34-year-old defender left Arsenal in less than perfect circumstances this summer and signed for Ligue 1 side Bordeaux. However, in an interview, months after he signed, Koscielny revealed that the pressure of a full Premier League season was too much. However, the Frenchman also added to that and went on to reveal that he did everything, in part, for his family.

“When you are a father, you know your life has changed. Now you don’t live for you, you live for your kids. You want to give them a good education. It is difficult because when you play every three days, you go away and you don’t spend a lot of time at home. Sometimes, when you are tired, you don’t want to do a lot at home. Everything I do between now and the future will be for my children. I don’t stop living my life but I will live for my children,” concluded Koscielny.
