Manchester City have started negotiations to sign River Plate star Nicolas de La Cruz in the winter transfer window. The Uruguayan’s release clause is a mere €22 million, an affordable and a modest fee for one of River's best players which has seen the Premier League Champions consider a move.

Manchester City are in negotiations for the signing of River Plate midfielder Nicolas De La Cruz, according to what is being reported by Sport Witness. The Manchester-based club has been heavily impressed with the 22-year-old midfielder. The player has caught the eye of City’s South American scouts and have asked for “references” of him in Argentina.

It’s claimed that his agent, Paco Casal, has had meetings with Manchester City, who have shown their interest in negotiating, with their limit being the player’s €22 million release clause. It's an affordable clause for a club of City’s stature but reports have indicated that the club will look to acquire him for less. There’s a trend in the South American clubs where the player’s ownership is often split, making the transfer matters more complicated than they seem to be.

The 2018 Copa Libertadores winners only have 30% of De La Cruz’s rights, with the other part going to his agent. The Argentine club will have to fight so they can get as much money as possible and reports have revealed that they are in the process of convincing his representative that the club was integral to De La Cruz's development.

Manchester United and Arsenal too have made contact and enquired about the midfielder but Manchester City are said to be the front runners.
