Former Manchester United star and now DC United player Wayne Rooney believes American players in Major League Soccer are underpaid, as the league heads towards negotiations for new collective bargaining agreement at the end of the year. The existing agreement expires on Jan 31, 2020.

At DC United since summer 2018, Wayne Rooney shared his thoughts about the new collective bargaining agreement that the MLS will negotiate this winter. The former Manchester United and Everton star believes American players are underpaid and there should be changes in order to promote better conditions for the home players. The focus of the negotiations are increased salaries, better travel accommodations, and increased player movement. Players are still flying in non-charter flights and are being paid according to the league's salary cap structure.

"I feel that American players get underpaid. I feel they deserve to get more money to stay in line with football in the rest of the world but also in terms of the American sports," Rooney was quoted saying by ESPN.

Rooney scored 23 goals in 45 league appearances for DC United. The 33-year-old forward will finish his career at the MLS at the end of the league's season, heading back to England to join Derby County.
