Bulgarian International Dimitar Berbatov has called it a day drawing curtains to a 21-year illustrious career during which he won several accolades in club career and for the National team. He last played competitive football for Kerala Blasters FC in the 2017-18 Indian Super League

Berbatov is Bulgaria’s all-time leading goal scorer and a record holder for Bulgarian Football of the Year award, winning it seven times. He played some of the best football of his career with Manchester United, playing a crucial role in two English Premier League titles back in 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons. The goal machine announced his retirement via a post on his official Instagram handle.

“The time has come to say that after almost 20 years playing football I am stopping with my professional active football career,” read Berbatov’s Instagram handle.

The striker played 78 matches for Bulgaria and scored 48 goals since making his International debut in 1999. Apart from Manchester United, he has also represented European clubs like Bayer Leverkusen, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and Monaco. Berbatov was out of action for more than a year and felt it was a right time to bid adieu to the beautiful game.

"Someone told me I need to say something, and seeing that people were asking me, especially back home, I need to give a farewell message. My last game was more than one year ago, so I think it’s the right time now to stop, and it's long overdue,” remarked the footballer.
