Despite putting up one of their best performances, Lajja Gauswami and Anjum Moudgil narrowly missed out qualification for the final of the women's 50m rifle three-position event in the ISSF World Cup on Tuesday. The duo ended up just one point behind the qualification mark in the end.

The World Cup, underway at Munich since 19th, saw a closely fought multi-way contest in the women's event yesterday. While the top spot was taken by Petra Zublasing with a score of 588, the other seven final spots went to shooters in the range of 583-585, with all the last four women shooting 583. In fact, 15 of the spots from 3rd to 17th fell in the 582-585 range.

Lajja Gauswami and Anjum Moudgil were unlucky to have ended up on the other side of the final narrowly, with both shooting 582. While Anjum finished 15th, Gauswami finished 17th on the lists.

The event has three positions – kneeling, prone and standing. Both women faltered in the kneeling position with scores of 193 and 189 to Anjum and Gauswami respectively, when the top scores were as high as 199. While Anjum did make up for it with a 199 in the prone position, her standing round pulled her down as she could hit only 190. Gauswami made creditable scores of 196 and 197 in the prone and standing event, but the deficit from the first round was too much to overcome eventually.

It is only the second year as a member of the senior India team for 21- year old Anjum. This performance marks her highest score and her best-ever performance in a World Cup.

In the men's 10M air pistol event, Jitu Rai finished a disappointing 22nd in qualification with a score of 579, while Oleh Omelchuk of Ukraine bagged the top spot with 588. Gurpreet Singh and Omkar Singh finished 32nd and 52nd respectively with scores of 578 and 574.
