Ankur Mittal has landed India’s first medal at the ISSF world cup in Mexico by clinching gold in the men’s double trap event on Wednesday. Mittal, who has set a world record in the process, has beaten Australia’s James Willet and China’s Ying Qui to claim top honors at the event.

Ankur Mittal had won the silver medal at last month’s International Shooting Sport Federation World cup (shotgun) in Delhi and now, beat the winner of that event, Australian James Willet on the third day of the competition in Mexico on Wednesday. Mittal capped off a strong day, finishing second in the qualification with a score of 138 out of a possible 150.

He beat China’s Qui 6-5 in the shoot-off to decide the second place after both of them had tied each other’s score in the qualifying rounds. In the six-man 80-targets final that resulted, Mittal missed only five targets, with only two in his last 40, to equal the world record and win gold, with a score of 75. Willet’s 73 managed to claim silver while Ying settled with a bronze with a total of 52, before being eliminated after 60 targets.

Mittal’s commendable achievement has set the standard for the other Indian men and women who will be in action in the skeet shooting disciplines which are scheduled to take place over the weekend and the participants include- Rashmee Rathore, Angad Vir Singh Bajwa, Man Singh and Amrinder Cheema.
