Heena Sidhu’s coach and life-partner, Ronak Pandit, has revealed that the determination shown by his wife is the reason why she has won so much on the international level. Heena will be competing for the gold medal at the Asian Games in the 10m air pistol event along with youngster Manu Bhaker.

Heena Sidhu created history back in 2013 as she became the first Indian pistol shooter to win a gold medal in an ISSF World Cup finals when she won the 10 metre air pistol event. Since then the Punjab-born shooter has gone on to win bronze at the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea and also bagged gold in the 25m air pistol event at this year’s 2018 Gold Coast CWG.

Her husband and coach, Ronak Pandit, heaped praise on his wife as he claimed that her determination and passion to always keep winning has helped her over the years.

“I wouldn’t use the word finicky. Shooters demand perfection. The margins are so close that when you take a shot from a distance of 35 feet, if your shot is half a millimetre closer to the centre, you could win. Obviously I will try and ensure that every variable is tested and controlled. This quest for perfection makes a shooter come across as demanding or finicky. It’s eventually to aid their performance. So when it comes to lighting or training under similar conditions or tuning their equipment or ensuring the correct ammunition that gets the most accurate results, shooters are demanding. Heena is very, very demanding. Without that, you don’t have a chance of winning,” Pandit told FirstPost.

Pandit, who himself won a 25m standard pistol gold medal while he partnering Samaresh Jung at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and a silver at the Asian Games in the same year in the 25m standard pistol team event with Jung and Jaspal Rana, is well aware of what it took to succeed in shooting. He trained Sidhu to the number one spot in the 10m air pistol rankings in 2014 and his highly-skilled student Shahzar Rizvi is the top-ranked shooter in the men’s 10m air pistol rankings.

“It’s a technical sport, so there are a lot of things that can affect you. If you don’t do the background work, then your performance will fall short somewhere. Shooters first take care of these things like the lighting or the quality of equipment or the range as these are the easiest to do,” Sidhu said.
