Five-time World Champion MC Mary Kom and former cricketer and former BJP MP Navjyot Singh Sidhu were nominated to the Rajya Sabha after the Rashtrapati Bhavan approved the list on Friday. President Pranab Mukherjee nominated a total of six personalities from different fields to the Upper House.

Apart from Mary Kom and Navjyot Singh Sidhu, the list also includes Narendra Jadhav, Economist and former member of National Advisory Council (NAC), journalist Swapan Dasgupta, Malayalam actor Suresh Gopi and senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy. The nominations are given to achievers in various spheres of public life and a total of 12 are nominated. The six nominees are selected for the seven vacant seats, of which one is kept in abeyance.

“The government can nominate members in this category at any time and it is not bound to an electoral cycle like the other seats,” said a senior official in the Rajya Sabha, reported the Hindu.

Mary Kom and Navjyot Singh Sidhu will be joining cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who was nominated back in 2012, in the Upper House of the parliament.

33-year old Mary Kom, who hails from Manipur, has won five golds and a silver at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in an illustrious career, which also includes the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and many more laurels at various Asian and International events. Mary Kom will be seen in action, next at the 2016 World Boxing championships, as she prepares to book a ticket for the Rio Olympics.

Former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has been a member of the Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) and was a member of Parliament from Amritsar (Lok Sabha constituency) between 2004 to 2014. Sidhu has played 51 Tests and 136 ODIs for India, scoring 3202 and 4413 runs respectively.
