Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished luck to all the athletes who will be representing the nation at the upcoming Rio Olympics after flagging off the “Run For Rio” program at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in Delhi on Sunday. He has also hoped for a larger Indian contingent at the 2020 Olympics.
“I hope these 119 sportspersons will perform well (in the games), and they will be able to win hearts of the people, who come there from different parts of the world, and will show the world what India is about. I am sure about it.” Mr. Modi said, reported IANS..
The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction over the record number of athletes India have been able to send to the Olympics this time around, pointing out that the government took special care of their training.
“India has been associated with the Olympic Games for over 100 years, but only this year we were able to send 119 sportspersons to Rio,” he said.
“We allotted special budget for their diet and training this time around.”
He added that the government had spent from Rs. 30 lakh to Rs 1.50 crore on individual players after giving them the option to train under whoever and wherever they wanted. However, Modi has aimed for a much more ambitious goal for the 2020 Olympics, which will be hosted in Tokyo. He has hoped to send more than 200 athletes to Tokyo, and insisted that every district should have a representative in the Indian contingent.
“Our government will do everything to support and prepare sportspersons for next 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. This time, it is 119, but next time we will strive to cross 200.
“When the 2020 games take place, let every district affirm that one athlete from our district will represent India at those games,” PM Modi said, reported IANS..
