Nita Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, has been nominated as a candidate for membership in the International Olympic Committee, pending election. If she gets elected Nita Ambani will become the first Indian woman to be on the apex sporting body.

The election will be held at the 129th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session that will take place in Rio de Janeiro between 2nd and 4th August 2016. The independent selection process follows a new procedure for recruitment of IOC members based on the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations. If the 52-year-old is elected, she will continue to be a member of the sporting body until the age of 70.

With her nomination to the International Olympic Committee, she also became the first Indian woman to achieve a nomination to the apex sporting body. Sir Dorabji Tata was the first Indian representative in the IOC, while Raja Randhir Singh is currently an honorary member of the organisation and was a member from 2000 to 2014.

“I believe in the power of sport to shape our youth, to bring together communities and bridge gaps between cultures and generations. I am grateful to IOC for this opportunity, it’s a recognition of India and Indian women. I am looking forward to the opportunity to contribute in meeting the goals of IOC,” Nita Ambani was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
