Indian Triple jumper Praveen Chitravel created history after he managed to clinch the bronze medal at the recent Youth Olympic Games being held in Buenos Aires. Chitravel’s triumph was India's second athletics medal in this Games after Suraj Panwar won silver in men's 5000m race walk on Monday.

A few days ago, 17-year old Suraj Panwar created history as he became the first Indian athlete to win a medal in the Youth Olympics after he won silver in the men’s 5000m race walk on Monday. Now, Young Indian triple jumper Praveen Chitravel managed to get his hands on a bronze medal in the ongoing Youth Olympic Games being held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Chitravel cleared a distance of 15.68m to finish fifth in the Stage two competition on Tuesday night. However, an above-average performance in Stage one where he was third with a jump of 15.84m took him to a podium-finish position with a combined effort of 31.52m. Cuba’s Alejandro Diaz won the gold medal with a combined effort of 34.18m (17.14 + 17.04) while Emmanuel Oritsemeyiwa (16.34 + 15.51) of Nigeria took the silver. This was India's 12th medal and first bronze in the Youth Olympic Games this year, having won three gold and eight silver medals.

In the new format being practised in the ongoing games, there are no finals in track and field (with the exception of 4km cross-country) and each event is held twice. The results from both rounds account towards the final standings.
