Asian Games bronze medallist Ashish Kumar is set to participate in the upcoming gymnastics championships at the Doha World Cup. Earlier, Ashish had failed to make it to the Baku World Cup, as the deadline for registration had ended and thus he decided not to pay the late fee for participation.

Ashish Kumar was the first Indian to bag medals at the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. The gymnast had communicated his willingness to participate at the Baku World Cup to the Gymnastic Federation of India but as the registration deadline had passed, GFI requested Kumar to pay the late admission fee of CHF 1,250 himself, so as to participate.

"Since the request was after the deadline, the applicable fine has to be borne by the person making the belated request. We have accordingly advised Ashish to arrange for payment of fine so as to enable us to make his registration. We have also informed this to Mr Rajinder Pathania, Project Officer in Sports Authority of India ", Riyaz Bhati, vice president GFI told the PTI.

However, Kumar had decided not to take part in the Baku World Cup and returned a mail citing that he was focusing on the Doha World Cup. He had also mentioned that he is targeting the World Championships to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

"The FIG has changed the point system of all the events and it will be very difficult to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics at the World Cups where one has to win a gold to have any hopes. So I will be primarily targeting the World Championship to qualify," Kumar told PTI.

The Uttar Pradesh gymnast had been out of action for a while due to his wrist and shoulder injuries. Although he recovered in time, the injuries had an adverse effect on his performances as he had finished 19th overall on Pommel Horse at the 2018 Asian Games and would look to improve at the World Cup.
