Commonwealth Championship | Indian weightlifters bag seven gold medals

Rakhi Halder and Davinder Kaur bagged gold medals in the women’s 59kg and 64kg category respectively, to take India’s overall tally to seven gold medals on the second day of the Commonwealth Championship. The Indian contingent also won five gold medals in the junior and youth sections.

The Indian weightlifting contingent continued their impressive displays at the ongoing Commonwealth Championships being held in Apia. In the women’s senior section, Rakhi Halder and Davinder Kaur bagged gold medals in the 59kg and 64kg category respectively on Wednesday. Kaur lifted a total of 184kg (80+104) to win the women's 59kg gold while Halder clinched top honours with a combined effort of 214kg (94+120) in the 64kg category.

The Indian contingent took their overall gold medal tally to seven as the Indian youngsters added five gold medals in the junior and youth sections. The Commonwealth Championships are currently being held simultaneously together for the youth, junior, and the senior categories.

On the first day of the global showpiece on Tuesday, India had clinched eight gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. Former world champion Mirabai Chanu secured the gold in women's 49kg with a total lift of 191kg.
