PKL 2019 | First aim is to get into playoffs, says Ajay Thakur
After the disappointing last two seasons Ajay Thakur, the captain of Tamil Nadu-based franchise says their only focus at the start of the campaign is to get into the playoffs. With the likes of Rahul Chaudhari, Manjeet Chillar, and Mohit Chillar that goal does seem achievable for them.
Tamil Thalaivas have been in a rut since their beginning of the Pro Kabaddi League now, with the Ajay Thakur-led side failing to impress anyone and everyone. They sat at the bottom of the points table in the last two seasons. In the entire last season, Thakur’s side hasn’t won much, winning only five in the entire three-month-long season.
To rectify this, the Thalavias have gone through major changes in the summer retaining only the captain and Manjeet Chhillar. In the raiding department, the franchise has brought in star raider Rahul Chaudhari for Rs.94 Lakhs, despite the 26-year-old's poor past season following which he was let go by Telugu Titans. However, Thakur revealed that he would be banking on his communication with Chaudhari. Â
"Rahul and I have been playing together for a while. We have spent a lot of time playing in one team, and we have always had excellent tuning," said Thakur, reported Firstpost.
"We had played together for Air India and a number of Nationals, and we are now coming together in PKL, which is a good sign. Our combination has always been top-notch, and I am looking forward to excelling with him again," Thakur further added.
Thakur also believes that once they get to the playoffs they will have good momentum to take it forward and the team would be in good spirits that will benefit them as well.
"Our first aim is to get into the Playoffs, and then take it from there. I am confident of a good show because we have a really good team this season, and all of us very excited to compete."Â
Thakur believes that PKL helps in building the confidence of players and also helps Indian Kabaddi as it provides a stage for showcasing of talent on a bigger stage. "Seniors will eventually phase out, but I want the next generation to be equally good, and I think the trend is there – Pardeep Narwal came, Rahul Chaudhari came, Pawan came last season. So I want at least two new faces to emerge this season to take Indian kabaddi forward," he concluded.
