As many as nine athletes participating in the ongoing Khelo India Games have turned out to be positive for banned substances. Two weeks back, six athletes, which included three from wrestling and one each from archery, track and field, and one from weightlifting, also tested positive.

A total number of 476 athletes were subjected to dope tests during the 2019 Khelo India Youth Games and from the entire group of players, nine tests have returned positive. The number earlier reported was six that jumped to nine after a weightlifter, a judoka and a swimmer’s samples have tested positive.

Earlier, a total of six contestants had tested positive for banned substances - three from wrestling, one from each of track and field, archery and weightlifting, which was almost two weeks ago.

“We carried out 476 tests during the Khelo India Youth Games this year, out of which results for 466 have come. We are waiting for 10 more reports. Out of the 466, nine athletes have failed the tests so far,” Navin Agarwal, the director general of National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA), told TOI.

The above testing procedure was conducted at the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL). The weightlifter’s sample tested positive for Peptide hormone, which increases muscle growth and strength. In addition to that, it also increases the peptide hormone, which improves the athletes’ endurance levels.

While the judoka has been found to be using Beta, which is used in the making of albuterol and levalbuterol, the swimmer had possession of anabolic steroids, which are used by athletes to enhance performance.
