India’s Veer Chotrani was the only positive for the Indian squash contingent as he advanced into the quarterfinals of the World Individual Junior Squash Championship in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. All his compatriots had already bowed out of their respective events in the previous round.

Chotrani was up against higher-seeded Yannick Wilhelmi of Switzerland and the thrilling clash took as many as four games before the Indian emerged victorious. The Indian had, however, started on a weaker note by even dropping a point in the beginning before he got back into his groove.

Wilhelmi had beaten India’s Yash Fadte in a close five-game encounter in the previous round and looked destined to do the same this round as well. However, Chotrani, who had a much comprehensive entry into the pre-quarterfinals with a straight-game win over D. Khan of Canada and eventually got the better of him.

“It is a remarkable performance by Veer, following up on his Asian success,” said Cyrus Poncha, the SRFI Secretary General, while wishing him the best for the quarter-final, reported Scroll.
