Indian men’s and women’s teams scripted history by winning gold medals in the second division of World team table tennis championships at Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. After securing the entry to the first division, Indian women’s team defeated Luxembourg 3-1, while the men beat Brazil 3-2.

India had secured promotion to the first division on Friday in both men’s and women’s category by reaching the finals and made it better on Saturday by securing two gold medals. In the women’s event, India had an easy outing in the final and defeated Luxembourg 3-1 to claim the gold. Mouma Das gave India a winning start by defeating Danielle Konsbruck 3-0 and Manika Batra doubled India’s lead with a victory over Tessy Gonderinger.

However, K Shamini‘s loss to Sarah de Nutte, in straight games, took some sheen out of Indian women’s team’s golden run, who remained unbeaten in the tournament after winning all of their eight matches. Luxembourg's hope of a comeback was finished off by Manika Batra in the reverse singles by defeating Danielle Konsbruck 3-0 to clinch the gold for India.

Unlike their female counterparts, Indian men’s team had to go through a gruelling encounter in the final to win the gold. Harmeet Desai led the Indian challenge in the final after the team management opted to rest star player Achanta Sharath Kamal. Although Harmeet won his match, Soumyajit Ghosh and Anthony Amalraj surrendered their matches and India trailed 1-2 after the third rubber. However, they pulled it back in the crucial fourth and fifth games with Soumyajit and Harmeet putting in spirited performances to clinch the match 3-2 in favour of India.
