Sharath Kamal bowed out to China's Lin Gaoyuan 11-13, 11-9, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8 and 11-4 in a round of 32-match last night ending India's hopes of a medal in the tournament. India got closest to the title courtesy of Manika Batra and Mouma Das who crashed out in the quarterfinals of the competition.
Sharath Kamal started the game on the front foot winning the first game against the World No. 40 Lin Gaoyuan on his second game point. However, the Chinese bounced back in the game and took a 2-1 lead over the 34-year old.
The Indian steadied his game and brought the match back on level terms when he won the fourth game 11-8. However, the Chinese held his nerve to thrash Kamal in consecutive games and move into the round of 16.
Earlier in the tournament, Kamal had stormed into the round of 32 after defeating Ukranian Kou Lei in straight games 11-3, 11-9, 14-12 and 11-3 and had looked like a genuine contender for the title and raised hopes of historic success at the competition.
However, it was the pair of Manika Batra and Mouma Das who registered the biggest success in the tournament as they entered in the quarterfinals of the championship but bowed out to the World No. 1 and 2 Chinese player Ding Ning and Liu Shiwen.
