India complete golden sweep at South Asian Junior TT Championships

Indian paddlers clinched all gold medals on offer at the South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championships in Mount Lavinia near Colombo on Saturday. India added six more gold medals on the final day to take the tally to 14 and thus, completed a clean sweep of top honors at the event.

In the junior boys' category, India dominated the group stages 3-0, with wins over Pakistan and hosts Sri Lanka and claim the coveted gold medal. The boys’ team comprising of Manav Thakkar, Manush Shah, and Parth Virmani had it easy against Pakistan’s Fahad Khawaja, Obaid Shah, and Basit Khan and then did an encore over Sri Lanka’s KDVMadhushan, PD Umesh Thennakoon and Nimesh Ranchagoda for the rout.

Manush thrashed Madhushan 11-7, 11-6, 11-9, but Manav dropped a game against Umesh before winning 11-9, 11-6, 8-11, 11-4. Finally, Parth completed the win with a 9-11, 11-4, 14-12, 11-8 victory over Nimesh in a close third match.  

India finished top of the pile with 8 points and became the second team to qualify for the Asian event. Among the girls, India won gold, followed by Sri Lanka who won silver. Both qualified for the Championships in Korea. Moumita Datta and Priyanka Pareek did the job for India in the junior section.

Finally, in the Cade girls category, India topped the league charts 3-0 with wins over Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Maldives, owing to Anusha Kutumbale, Swastika Ghosh, and Vanshika Bhargava.

This was India’s second gold on Friday. And the Cade boys followed suit on Saturday with a similar victory margin over Pakistan, and then Sri Lanka for India’s fourth gold. H. Jeho, Chinmaya Somaiya, and Payas Jain registered the wins for India.
