India's participation in the Hong Kong Open did not prove to be successful with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran losing in the round of 32 against Germany's Ruwen Filus. However, Gnanasekaran was the only Indian to have posed some sorts of challenge while other players remained highly unsuccessful.

With 2018 being the first year of Hong Kong open Table Tennis tournament, it made a grand opening at the Queen Elizabeth stadium. As a part of the ITTF world tour, the tournament was organized by the Hong Kong table tennis association and has been supervised by ITTF.

However, India's campaign in the tournament was not that great. India’s doubles pair, Sanil Shetty and Harmeet Desai could not register any win, losing 5-11, 9-11, 11-9, 3-11 against Patrick Franzsiska and Jonathan Groth in the opening round, but Gnanasekaran kept some of India’s pride alive with some superb performance, but finally lost in the round of 16 which brought an end to his campaign.

In the qualification stages, the Chennai guy impressively defeated Denmark's Yujia Zhai and also got the better of Austria's Robert Gardos in the final preliminary rounds and in the process, also became the only Indian to come so further in the game. However, he could not hold up against world no. 21 Ruwen Filus and lost 8-11, 10-12, 10-12, 7-11 against him, hence ending India's campaign in the tournament.
