Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Archana Kamath clinched gold medal in the mixed team event at the Commonwealth table tennis championship on Sunday as India continued their dominance. However, veteran Sharath Kamal bowed out to Singapore’s 17-year-old Pang Yu En Koen in a thrilling encounter.

The mixed team victory saw India taking their god count to three on penultimate day of the championships, thanks to the duo of G Sathiyan and Archana Kamath, who overcame Singapore's Peng Yu En Koen and Goi Rui Xuan quite comprehensively with a 3-0 score line in the final at Cuttack on Sunday.

However, the biggest upset of the day came in the men’s singles, where Koen hogged all the limelight by staging a brilliant comeback to beat Kamal in the quarterfinal. The promising youngster had to fight a tough draw to enter the main draw of the tournament and even that wasn’t enough for he had to beat the likes of Manush Shah, and seventh seed Olajide Omatoyo.

To his luck though, the veteran Indian paddler seemed to be suffering from a severe backache and could still lead 3-1 at one point with it. But the fitter and much younger Singaporean, ranked 376th, fought back and Sharath started committing unforced errors as he eventually won 5-2. Pang would next be meeting Harmeet Desai in the singles semifinal on Monday.

Pang, however, couldn’t repeat the same alongside partner Goi against Sathiyan and Archana in the mixed doubles final, but would hope to go all the way as he is sitting just victories away from the singles semifinals on Monday.
