Indian ace Tennis star Sania Mirza has retained her No. 1 spot in women doubles for the second consecutive year despite her recent draught of trophies. The Hyderabad-born star failed to defend the WTA Finals in Singapore with partner Martina Hingis despite getting back with her last week.

After losing to Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the semifinals of the WTA Finals Singapore on Saturday, her numero Uno position had come under a serious threat, but Makarova and Vesnina then defeated Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova to lift the doubles title, denying Mattek-Sands the Number One spot.

This year, Sania has not been able to replicate her tremendous 2015 performances as she won Australian Open with Hingis and Cincinnati Masters with Barbora Strycova. Although Sania again paired with Hingis for the WTA Finals in Singapore, the tour came to an unfortunate end as they lost in the semifinals.

Elated by the news, Sania said, “I am very happy. It’s an amazing honour to be number one for the second year. It has been an amazing journey for me,” reported PTI.

She added, “For me, this has been an unbelievable journey and the kind of stuff that dreams are made of! I’ve always felt that reaching the pinnacle in any sphere of activity is a huge achievement but staying there for a prolonged period is even more difficult than getting there for the first time.”
