Reigning Australian Open champion Roger Federer has signed a three-year deal with Swiss Indoors, for which he will continue playing at the event until 2019. Federer, who had missed the second half of 2016 with a knee injury, returned to action and scripted a fairytale win at the Australian Open.

Federer, who won the Swiss Open seven times since making his debut in the tournament in 1998, said, "I can hardly wait to step out again in front of my home crowd in autumn. To play in Basel is always one of the highlights of the year,"

After defeating his arch-rival Rafael Nadal in the final of the Australian Open, Federer had said, "If I am spared again by the injuries, I am convinced that I am still capable of beating the best players in the world in the big tournaments.”

The Swiss Open masters will commence on October 21 and go on till 29. It is an ATP 500 event, the fourth category behind Grand Slams, World Tour Finals and Masters 1000 tournaments.

Expressing his delight at Federer's addition, event president Roger Brennwald said, "We are in the privileged position of having been able to secure the participation of Roger Federer in our tournament for a further three years."
