Dominic Thiem booked the first semi-final spot of the Roland Garros by defeating reigning champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets. The 23-year old looked in complete control after the first set and eventually denied the Serbian a second consecutive French Open title.
Thiem won the first set after a fierce battle between the two resulting in the match going into a tiebreaker which the Austrian narrowly won 7-5. The World No. 7 started the second set on the same note and won the first game. In the second game, he tied the match at 40 all and then took the advantage point over Djokovic. The winning point of the game resulted in a highlight reel moment for the day.
Djokovic started with a powerful serve which the Austrian returned with full force and after exchanging multiple shots from the baseline, the Serbian thought of catching Thiem by surprise by dropping the ball near the net. However, it backfired when Thiem covered the ground and outwitted Djokovic who was caught running in the wrong direction and lost his footing in a bid to get to the ball which eventually got past the Serb resulting in a lost game for him.
Thiem will face the King of clay Rafael Nadal in the semi-final who is looking to win his tenth French Open title.
