Doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna has decided that he will skip the Rogers Cup beginning in Toronto on August 6 and will reach Jakarta on August 14 in order to get acclimatized to the conditions. Bopanna had suffered a shoulder injury during Wimbledon and will now play directly in the Asian Games.

Bopanna started his 2017 season on a high note as partnered with compatriot Jeevan Neduchziyan at the Chennai Open and lifted the title by defeating pair Purav Raja and DiVij Rajan. He entered the 2017 French Open with Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski where they won the Grand Slam title by beating Anna Lena Gronefeld and Rober Farah in the final. However, 2018 has not been very kind to him.

Bopanna entered 2018 Australian Open with Hungarian star Timea Babos and the duo managed to reach the finals but were beaten by Gabriella Dabrowski and Mate Pavic. He was expected to have a good run-in on grass but the Indian star suffered a shoulder injury during the event and had to withdraw from the tournament. He was expected to take part in the Rodgers Cup before the Asian Games but Bopanna has decided to skip the event so as to be fit to participate in the Asian Games that is scheduled to begin on the August 18.

“Rohan has recovered from his shoulder injury but he thought it doesn't make sense to travel all the way to the US just for a week. Those are big tournaments and you need to be match sharp. He’s losing about 1000 points by not playing for two weeks but he thought it is a better decision to save his shoulder for the Asian Games. So he is reaching Palembang on 14th August to get used to the conditions, the surface to be ready for the Asian Games,” Zeeshan Ali, the Davis Cup coach and Indian men’s squad captain said to the TOI.

"He is going there a week earlier to practice. We will reach on 16th August. The singles start on the 18th August and doubles on 20th. So we have few days to practice together."
