Former World number one Serena Williams is set to make her return to the tennis court after almost a year on the sidelines as she will be part of the US Doubles team at the Fed Cup. Serena skipped the Australian Open in January in order to recover from the birth of her child who was born last year.

Serena Williams' last competitive game ended in a victory as she secured the 2017 Australian Open which incidentally was her 23rd Grand Slam title - the most in the Open era. She is now just one Grand Slam away from the all-time record held by Australian tennis legend Margaret Court. Williams, who gave birth to her first child last September, had to, for obvious reasons, miss the rest of the season due to the same.

However, according to AFP reports, the veteran tennis ace is set to make her return at the at the Fed Cup in Asheville, North Carolina, where the home team - the United States will begin the defence of its title against underdogs Netherlands. Williams talked about the hurdles she overcame and said that he had the benefit of a different perspective following the birth of her baby daughter.

“There’s been a lot of ups and downs in the practice. It also gives me another view, it’s almost relaxing for me as I have nothing to prove. Again, just fighting against all odds to be out there again, to be competing again,” Williams told reporters.

Williams has not played a WTA tournament since her triumph at Melbourne last year and revealed that she was bedridden for six weeks. She said that she had to have surgery after her daughter was delivered by an emergency cesarean section.

"I have long-term goals obviously. Right now my main goal is just to stay in the moment," said Williams, who played an exhibition match in December. It goes unsaid 25 [Grand Slams] is obviously something that I would love, but I'd hate to limit myself," she added.

The 36-year-old had initially targeted last month's Australian Open as her comeback to defend her 2017 title, but abandoned that goal after declaring she was not "where I personally want to be."

Although she is making her comeback to the court, Williams said that she has not yet decided whether she will compete at this year's remaining three Grand Slams. When asked if she would compete at the French Open, Williams said, "I don't know. Right now I'm focused on this weekend and after that I'll figure out what it might be."
