On a day when the Americans dominated the tournament, Donald Young didn’t have to break a sweat to register a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Indian qualifier Ramkumar Ramanathan. Top-seeded Jack Sock has won a match for the first time this year as he beat John-Patrick Smith 6-4, 6-4.

Ramanathan got the better of US’ Bjorn Fratangelo 6-3, 6-3 in the qualifying event to book a berth for the main draw of the $622,675 ATP tennis tournament in the US, but couldn’t take the momentum forward as Young proved too good for him.

Ramkumar, who had already gained 12 ATP points by reaching the first round, seemed to struggle from the first set of the match and Young capitalized on that to send the Indian on the back foot. The Chennai boy was terrible with his serve and conceded game point five times on his own serve. The unforced errors committed by the Indian were sufficient for the American to gain the upper hand in the game and he finished that off with a victory.

In the other first-round matches, Sock, the highest-ranked American at No. 8, won a match for the first time in 2018, beating qualifier John-Patrick Smith 6-4, 6-4 on the opening night. This was the first match for the ATP World Tour finals qualifier since he lost to Yuichi Sugita last month in the first round of the Australian Open. Although he participated in the Auckland Open in New Zealand, he dropped a first-round match because of the injury.
