Leander Paes, partnering Jamie Cerretani, has been knocked out after losing his doubles quarter-final at the Hall of Fame Open tournament in Newport. But there was some good news for the fans as well with Ramkumar Ramanathan managing to reach his first ever ATP semi-finals.

Ramanathan, the 23-year-old from Chennai, defeated Canada’s Vasek Pospisil in straight sets (7-5, 6-2) in the quarter-finals. He took one hour and 18 minutes to achieve this feat and enter the semi-finals to play against America’s Tim Smyczek.

Veteran, Paes played his first match since setting the Davis Cup world record five months back for the most number of wins in doubles. Paes, along with his doubles partner Cerrenati, lost in the quarter-finals against Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Austin Crajicek 3-6, 6-7 (3). Jeevan and Austin post this victory, booked a semi-final berth against Spain’s Marcelo Arevalo and Mexico’s Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela.

The second-seeded duo of Divij Sharan and Jackson Withrow got the better of Australia’s Matthew Ebden and Ukraine’s Sergiy Stakhovsky with a scoreline of 7-6 (4), 6-3 advancing through to the semi-finals against New Zealand’s Artem Sitak and Israel’s Janathan Erlich.
