Indian tennis star, Rohan Bopanna has said that he is uncertain about his participation in the Rogers Cup in Canada ahead of the 2018 Asian Games. Bopanna has already missed three ATP World Tour events including the Bastad event and has been out of action since Wimbledon due to a shoulder injury.

Doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna and his French partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin had conceded their men’s doubles second round at Wimbledon earlier this month. Bopanna had planned to play alongside Divij Sharan at the Bastad event so as to prepare for the upcoming Asian Games. The 38-year-old said that the doctors advised him to take three weeks in order for the shoulder injury to heal properly. He spoke about getting back on the court by making small progressions and then mentioned the uncertainty of his participation at the Rogers Cup.

“I suffered a minor shoulder injury which is healing at a good pace. The doctors advised me to take a three-week rest. I started-off yesterday (practice session) and I am supposed to start serving on Tuesday and see how the shoulder is. I am feeling fit and might go to Toronto (for the Rogers Cup) but if I don’t then I will prepare of the Asian Games,” Bopanna told PTI.

Talking about the Asian Games, Bopanna said India’s strong team might win the country a lot of medals this time around and he is looking forward to it.

“We have a very strong team this time around and hence we have a good chance of winning medals at the Asian Games. I am looking forward to it,” he said.

On being paired with Sharan at the Asian Games, Bopanna said that he has been paired with a lot of players over the years. He further said that Sharan was a part of the Indian Oil team before and they have played together. The veteran also said that he is looking forward to playing the mixed doubles with Ankita Raina or Prarthana Thombare and share his experience.

“I have been paired with numerous players over the years and it is nothing new to me. I don’t have a problem anymore. Divij and I have known each other for a very long time now and both of us were a part of the Indian Oil team as well. I am looking forward to the mixed doubles event as well. I would love to share my experience with them,” Bopanna added.

Bopanna praised Leander Paes’ fitness level and said that the 45-year-old was the best players India has ever produced.

“He is the best without a doubt. The way he has been maintaining his fitness level and playing well is phenomenal,” he concluded.
