Former world number one Novak Djokovic has revealed that he does not consider himself to be a contender for a Wimbledon Trophy ahead of the upcoming Grass Grand Slam. Djokovic reckoned that Swiss legend Roger Federer was the favorite in England followed by last season's finalist Marin Cilic.

Once regarded as one of the most lethal and technical players in the sport of tennis, 31-year old Novak Djokovic remains a shadow of his former-self as far as recent results are concerned. After an embarrassing French Open quarter-final defeat against Italian journeyman Marco Cecchinato earlier this month, Djokovic put up a spirited display against Croatian tennis ace Marin Cilic in the finals of the Queen’s Club Open yesterday.

Djokovic was within a touching distance of of his first title for a period of 12 months after he earned a match point in the second set of Sunday’s match against Cilic. But the former world number one lost his cool as he wasted that opportunity as Cilic went on to eventually win the match.

But the Serbian player maintained that he will not be a contender for a Wimbledon title ahead of the upcoming Grand Slam that is scheduled to start on July 2. Djokovic added that Swiss legend Roger Federer and Cilic are both favorites to lift the trophy in England next month.

“I wouldn’t say I’m a contender, you know, for a (Wimbledon) trophy or anything like that. “I have to keep my expectations very low, considering my results in the last 12 months. I think everyone will agree that Roger is the number one favourite. But Cilic is right up there next to him,” Djokovic told AFP sources.

The three-time Wimbledon winner hasn’t won a major title since he completed his career Grand Slam when he won the 2016 French Open. However, Djokovic claimed his performance at Queen’s showed he is in a better place mentally and physically than he was before.

“Obviously I am right after coming from the court, speaking to you guys, and I’m not going to be ecstatic about losing a final. I’m not feeling that great at the moment. But when I sleep over, tomorrow things will obviously have a different perspective for me.

“You mentioned Miami. Yeah, that was probably one of the lowest points I have had in terms of state of mind, where I was at that point. Also my game. It’s quite a significant difference,” Djokovic added.
