Prajnesh Gunneswaran’s fairytale run on the tennis court was brought to an abrupt halt after Elias Ymer defeated the Indian by a scoreline of 2-6, 5-7 in the finals of this year’s Pune Challenger on Saturday. Despite the humbling loss, Gunneswaran achieved a career-best singles rank of 104.

Indian tennis ace, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, has had a couple of eventful weeks that have helped him jump the ladder in the ATP rankings. The 29-year old athlete, who hails from Chennai, won the Bengaluru Open last week and looked in fine form throughout the Pune Challenger as well as he made the finals against third-seeded Swede, Elias Ymer.

However, the Indian’s magnificent outing in Pune was brought to a rather abrupt halt as he was outplayed by Swede by a scoreline of 2-6, 5-7 in the final. Gunneswaran ended the tournament as runner-up but managed to garner 48 points in his tally to achieve a career-high ATP ranking of 104.

“May be I need to get stronger to last in such long rallies but I could have played better. I need to get quicker and hit heavy so that I can take away two steps from him so that he does not return everything.

“He deserved to win, he played better than me throughout. I had my chance but he made extra balls. I was 9-0 (matches) coming into this match and definitely tired now,” Prajnesh told PTI sources after the match.

The Indian Davis Cup member had lost the final of the 2016 edition of the tournament as well. Gunneswaran will now try to secure an entry into the main draw of the Australian Open by winning the Asia-Pacific Play-off in Zuhai.
