Bajrang Punia claimed gold in the men’s wrestling freestyle, 65kg category, at the Asian Indoor Games after his opponent forfeited in the final. Three bronze medals were also added by Sheetal Tomar and Navjot Kaur in women’s freestyle 48kg and 69kg categories, and Krishnan Sasikiran in Chess.

After registering convincing wins against opponents of Iran and Tajikistan in the quarter and semi-final respectively, Bajrang Punia saw his opponent Daichi Takatani forfeiting the contest, as the 23-year-old Indian, who is also the reigning Asian champion, claimed a gold in the men’s freestyle 65kg category. His win took India’s gold tally to 6.

India saw their impressive run continue on the ninth day of the Games as four more medals were added to the cabinet. Apart from Punia’s gold, Sheetal Tomar and Navjot Kaur added two bronze medals. While Tomar defeated Eka Arfenda of Indonesia in the women’s wrestling freestyle 48kg category, Kaur overcame Turkmenistan’s Solmaz Bozaganowa by fall in the freestyle 69kg class.

Having a great game against Australia’s Rupinder Kaur in the opening bout where Tomar won 11-0, she lost to China’s Yanan Sun in the quarter-finals 8-2. However, she made up for it in the repechage by defeating Grace Loberanes of Philippines and finally overcame Arfenda in the bronze medal contest.

Kaur had begun with confidence too, by registering a 21-0 win over Desi Sinta of Indonesia and beating Turkmenistan’s Mamajan Sayyewa 10-0, before she went down to Feng Zhou of China in the semi-final, losing 11-0. However, she made up for it in the repechage round.

The other medal of the day was brought in by Krishnan Sasikiran in Chess as he clinched a bronze in men’s standard individual event. India now occupy the 12 position in the table with 6 golds, 7 silvers and 11 bronzes.
