The IOC has withdrawn the gold medal won by the Russian women’s relay team in the 4x100m event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The committee has made this decision on Tuesday, after finding traces of banned substances in the samples given by sprinter Yulia Chermoshanskaya.

Amidst all the doping allegations, the Russian Olympic federation has received another blow, as the IOC has announced on Tuesday that they have disqualified Summer Olympic athlete, Yulia Chermoshanskaya, and her Russian teammates who won the gold in the women’s 4x100m event in the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Her participation in the women’s 200m race has also been cancelled after her sample was tested positive for banned substances, and the Russian federation has been ordered to return the medals.

An official IOC statement read, “Yulia Chermoshanskaya, 30, of the Russian Federation, competing in the women’s 200m and the women’s 4x100m relay events, has been disqualified from the Olympic Games Beijing 2008, in which she ranked 8th in the 200m and 1st in the 4x100m relay with her teammates. Reanalysis of Chermoshanskaya’s samples from Beijing 2008 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substances stanozolol and dehydrochlormethyltestosterone (turinabol).”

It is a common procedure for the IOC to reanalyze previous samples of athletes, for substances that were undetectable using the tests that were in place previously.
