Three more Indian athletes qualify for Rio 2016

Triple jumper Renjith Maheshwari, sprinter Dharambir Singh, and Jinson Johnson have qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics, increasing the size of the contingent to 108. Maheswari and Dharambir broke national records enroute to securing their berths to the Olympics at the Bangalore Grand Prix.

Dharambir Singh clocked 20.45s in the 200m event at Bengaluru to qualify for the Olympics. He bettered his own national record of 20.66 s and became the first Indian male athlete to qualify for the 200m event in 36 years. The last Indian male in the event was P Subramaniam in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.Jinson Johnson clocked 1:45:98 on Monday at Bengaluru in the Grand Prix event to book his ticket to Rio. The qualifying mark set by IAAF was 1:46:00. Triple jumper Renjith Maheshwari bettered the previous national record of 17.17m, held by Aprinder Singh, by 0.13m.
