After a successful outing in the Taiwan Open last week, where Dutee Chand bagged two golds, helping India to a total of 9 medals, the Indian athletes will now compete in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, with an opportunity to make the cut for the Olympic Games in Rio later this year.

The two-day event in Taiwan started a day after the IAAF World Challenge, where the women’s 4x100m relay team bettered the previous national record. But with none of the athletes having qualified for Rio yet, they will have another chance in June.

“They will go to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in June,” said C.K.Valson, the AFI secretary, to The Hindu. The meet is expected to start on June 18.

The 4x400m relay runners, who will be heading to Europe next month, are training in Spala, Poland to prepare for the meet. Valson said, “Most of them will be peaking only after June. They are now in the ‘loading’ phase.”

There is also a sense of Indian athletes participating in lower rung meets, and will probably need to choose their events wisely as they gear up their preparations for Olympic qualifications.
