One of the greatest tragedies of life is when your chest-thumping pride is replaced with a walk of shame with the entire world watching. Zharnel Hughes learnt that the hard way as, after the review confirmed that he intentionally tried to block Jereem Richards, he was stripped of the gold medal.

The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games has attracted a lot of attention among the sports lovers all around the world, but truth be told, there hasn’t been much antics or controversy involved, which has been a big part of major competitions. However, on the eighth day, England’s Zharnel Hughes did something for which he would curse himself for long long time.

In the Men's 200m final, Hughes was going well in his pursuit of finishing first, but he was getting some tough competition from Trinidad and Tobago’s Jereem Richards, who was making a late surge at the finish line. Just before the finish line, when it seemed like, the T&T star might actually overcome Hughes for the elusive yellow medal, the latter used his arms to disrupt the former’s rhythms. However, both managed to cross the finish line exactly at the same time and it was enough for the Englishman to take a lap of honour with the Saint George's Cross on his shoulders. While checking the replays of the race, the referees saw that had occurred and that is when tragedy struck.

In the replay, it was evident that Hughes used his hands to disrupt Richards from overtaking him and the panel decided it was enough evidence to strip the Englishman of his medal and award it to the Trinidad and Tobago star. The next two successful runners Canada’s Aaron Brown and Nigeria’s Leon Reid were given the silver and bronze medal respectively.

Here is how Twitter reacted to his moment of madness.

And then he was disqualified
