The Indian women's basketball team had to face a defeat as they went down 61-79 to Kazakhstan, while the men's handball team went down 29-40 to Iraq in the opening rounds of the Asian Games. Indian men's team had lost to Chinese Taipei on August 13 and Bahrain on August 15, before losing to Iraq.

The Group A preliminary round of basketball between India and Kazakhstan on Friday didn't hint a positive start for the Indian eves as they lost 61-79. Having a firm grip on the match right from the start, the scores in the first two quarters read 13-18, 12-19 to Kazakhstan's favour and they never let go of their lead. Though India reached 21-22 in the third quarter they were unable to hold against Kazakhstan in the fourth quarter (15-20) as the match was swiped out of India's hands.

Indian Women's basketball team’s next encounter will be against Chinese Taipei on Sunday. Following that, they will take on Unified Korea on August 20, while playing against Indonesia on August 23 in the basketball 5x5 preliminary Group A matches.

In the Group D preliminary match of the men's handball event, India lost 29-40 to Iraq, after having lost to Chinese Taipei and Bahrain. The scores earned by Deepak Ahlawat (8) and Karamjeet Singh (6) could not suffice as they lacked in both the first and second period, having scored 13-18 and 16-22 respectively.
