World youth bronze-medallist Naman Tanwar managed to beat Asian silver-medal awardee Sumit Sangwan in the ongoing heavyweight (91kg) category trials for the CWG competition next month. Tanwar’s selection will only be confirmed after the WSB clash against the Russian team tomorrow.

Tanwar was part of the trio that clinched medals at the 2017 Galym Zharylgapov Boxing Tournament in Karaganda, Kazakhstan last year. Tanwar finished the tournament with a silver medal in the 91kg category where he was also adjudged as the best boxer in the tournament.

And things have been looking good for the youngster ever since, as he recently managed to beat Asian silver-medalist Sumit Sangwan in the trials for the Commonwealth Games to be held next month. Tanwar, who started boxing with an aim to manage his weight better, got the better of his successful rival in the trial which took place at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.

Victory at the trials meant that Tanwar’s chances of traveling on the plane to Australia next month have increased substantially. The Boxing Federation of India had decided to hold trials for only the 91kg and 52kg categories. They selected the rest of the six male boxers for the CWG on the basis of a points system that was put together last year. Tanwar and Olympian boxer Sangwan had won bronze medals at the India Open in January.

But even though Tanwar won the CWG trial, his selection for the tournament would be confirmed only after India’s World Series of Boxing match versus the Russian team tomorrow.

The reason behind this is India Open gold-medallist Sanjeet, who is part of tomorrow’s match versus Russia. Should Sanjeet win his match, it has been decided to finalise Sanjeet’s name for the Games which are set to take place in Gold Coast from April 4 onwards.
