IPL Mega Auction 2024

We were promised a mega auction like never before and boy did Jeddah deliver! As many as three players breached the 20 crore mark – it had only been done twice before in 17 years of the IPL – and the Lucknow Super Giants set a new record for most expensive buy with the acquisition of Rishabh Pant for ₹27 crores. Bizarrely, it was the second time the record was broken at the event, given Punjab Kings had acquired Shreyas Iyer for ₹26.75 crores just moments before. An all-new RTM dynamic was at play, and boy did it make for interesting choices – be it inflating Jake-Fraser McGurk’s price to 9 crores or Mumbai Indians refusing to place an improved bid for Shamar Joseph after LSG played the RTM.

All in all, ₹639.15 crores were spent across the two days by all 10 teams combined for 182 players, including 62 foreigners and 120 Indians. Only Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Punjab Kings were able to complete their squads of 25 whereas Royal Challengers Bengaluru ended with 75 lakhs to spare, even though they had three slots open. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals ended with the smallest squads of 20 players each.
